News grab bag

According to Cedric Golden (Statesman), Drew Stubbs signed with the Reds today. His signing bonus: $2M. He's been assigned to the Reds' advanced rookie camp in Billings, Montana, where Sam Lecure played last year. (Sam is now playing for the Sarasota Reds.)

Also from Cedric Golden: Carson Kainer's been told that he needs a kidney transplant. Carson's doctor told him his kidney function went down to 13 percent. I recall reading somewhere shortly after the draft that Carson thought his stock had fallen due to his kidney problems. Based on the doctor's prognosis, Carson has decided not to turn pro at the moment and now plans to return to UT next year. While that's great news for UT, it's awfully sobering for Carson. I wish him all the best and hope he finds a transplant match soon.

And, again from Cedric Golden: Joey Parigi has elected to transfer to Arizona State. I always liked his herky-jerky motion. He's hoping for a better fit with the Sun Devils and I wish him well.

UPDATE (June 15th). A couple of links to more in-depth articles about Drew and Carson: Longhorns' Stubbs signs with Reds by Cedric Golden and Longhorns outfielder Kainer needs kidney transplant by Cedric Golden.
