Alumni news: J.P. Howell, Jason Aspito and Ryan Russ
The Royals traded J.P. Howell to Tampa Bay on Tuesday. It's one of the first moves by the Royals' new general manager Dayton Moore. The story from the Royals' point of view: Moore's imprint already taking shape (MLB.com). And, from the Devil Rays: Rays trade Gathright to Royals by Bill Chastain (MLB.com). The Devil Rays apparently don't have much to say just yet. J.P. has been assigned to the Durham Bulls. Scott Dunn also plays with the Bulls. Ah. I found another link: Rays shuffle roster by Dennis Maffezzoli (Sarasota Herald-Tribune). It sounds like J.P. will be in the Bulls' starting rotation. (Thanks to Esther for this tip, by the way. It somehow slipped under my radar. There's only so much a gal can keep her eye on, eh?)
Jason Aspito was promoted to the Angels' AAA affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League. It's his first time at AAA. Congrats, Jason!
Ryan Russ was apparently released by the Vero Beach Dodgers (Class A Advanced Dodgers' affiliate) sometime within the last couple of weeks. He has now signed with the Coastal Bend Aviators, a member of the American Association independent baseball league. He'll be playing with a couple of Texas Exes: Jeff Ontiveros and Tim McGough (who transferred from Texas to TCU after the 2002 season).
