2006 MLB Draft: 2nd day

Adrian Alaniz (36th round, Cardinals), Randy Boone (38th round, Twins), and three more signees (Carmine Giardina (28th, Red Sox), Taylor Hammack (46th, Giants), and Clint Stubbs (49th, Rangers)) were drafted today.

Which means that Chais Fuller, Hunter Harris, Joseph Krebs, Brett Lewis, Nick Peoples, Clay Van Hook, and Chance Wheeless were not. I really am surprised about Nick. I guess that means those guys will all be back (except for Hunter who's a senior).

I got email asking about the likelihood that Carson and Adrian will come back. I doubt very seriously that Carson will come back. Adrian might if he thinks he can boost his numbers. But, I kinda doubt it. I was looking through my draft summary page from last year and see that a lot of those guys down in the bottom of the draft went ahead and signed. One name that stands out, though, is Edward Degerman (rhp, Rice). He was drafted by the Red Sox in the 41st round last year. This year, the Cardinals picked him in the 4th. That's a huge move. So, if Adrian thinks he can do something like that, he just might come back. On the other hand, I pointed out Patrick Egan from Qunnipiac who was picked in the 35th last year and the 36th this year. You just never know what'll happen. So, it depends on how much of a gambler a player (and his parents...or whoever it is that's advising the player) is. I kinda think, though, with the way that Adrian was talking in post-game interviews the other day, that he won't be back. He might've been thinking he'd go higher when he was giving those interviews, though. And, since he's only a sophomore, he's got an extra bargaining year available to him that most 4-year college players don't get.

You just never know...

Oh. And, don't forget to check out this year's summary of the draft for info on (non-UT) players of interest.
