Game 38: Baylor at Texas
Sorry I didn't post last night but I was too tired by the time I got home to do much of anything but collapse in my bed. The good news is that the Horns won 8-6. The bad news is that Baylor scored 6 on Adrian Alaniz in 3.1 innings and chased him out of the game. The game seemed to go on forever. But, I think it wasn't much longer than usual. It started almost an hour later than we're used to so it's not surprising that it would end at 10:30. The breaks between innings probably lasted 20 seconds longer than usual due to the TV coverage. The home plate ump (Wes Hamilton) did not help things at all by having a very very narrow strike zone which led to a lot of full-counts on the batters. It wasn't a consistent strike zone, though, which made you feel bad for the pitchers. We had to wait with bated breath all night long after every pitch to see what he'd call, unless it was 2 or 3 feet outside the zone. If it was anywhere near the strike zone, we'd just have to wait. And, we'd be surprised at the call at least half the time. Frustrating.
Anyway, a few random observations...
- I was amused to note at then end of the 3rd, with Texas up 6-2, that 3 of the team's 4 hits were home runs. While playing in Disch-Falk. That's amazing. The home runs hit by Drew Stubbs and Carson Kainer were sure things. The second they were off the bat, there was no doubt they'd clear the fence. Not so with Preston Clark's. He hit that ball really high. And, we all held our breath. It just cleared the fence. Whew.
- Nick Peoples continues to struggle. I was a bit surprised to see him starting at 3b again. I think the Horns really want him in the lineup but there really doesn't seem to be any room at the moment. He's leading the team in errors with 12. Bradley Suttle's in 2nd place with 7. The team as a whole has a pretty high 54. I honestly think one of the errors charged to Nick last night should've been charged to Chance Wheeless, though. It was amazing that Nick even got to the ball. He had to rush his throw and it bounced but it was in time and was a ball that Chance really has to dig out. I think Nick gets to a lot of balls that would just get through for hits if someone else was playing at 3b...leading to more chances at errors since he's making tough throws. And, I think the coaches have seen that so have kept him in. But, he also seems to be pushing a bit much. Last week, he slipped and fell as he was going after a bunted ball. He should've just held onto the ball but threw wild to 1b instead. His offense is starting to suffer as well. He raised his average to .370 at UNLV but it's gradually gone downhill and is currently sitting at 286. What to do? There isn't room for him in the outfield anymore. And, I know they really want him in there. Maybe it would be good to just go ahead and give him a few days off. I don't know. I feel awful for him. It's all so weird. He's been my favorite player on the team for awhile now. 'Makes me sad.
- Joseph Krebs had a great game. Austin Wood had a great game last night. Way to go, bullpen!
- I just saw a Time Warner commercial for their DVR service featuring Augie Garrido. "It's a home run." Ha! It cracked me up.
Ah well... Here's to getting a sweep this afternoon!
