Game 25: Texas at Texas Tech

Well...they got the game in. I almost wish they hadn't. You know what that means.

Texas lost 1-2. The line:

RHE
Texas 000 100 000 - 140
Texas Tech 000 001 70x - 270

Kyle McCulloch took the loss, dropping his record to 1-4. You gotta feel bad for him. And, you have to wonder about the decision to leave him in past the 6th inning with the way things have gone this season for Kyle. He pitched a great 5 & 1/3 innings. He was perfect through the first 3. He gave up a double in the 4th and a single in the 5th. He didn't walk anyone. In the 6th, the Red Raiders started hitting the ball pretty hard. He gave up a triple and a double to tie the game up before getting out of the inning. To that point, he'd thrown 82 pitches by my count. I was very surprised to hear the radio guys announce he was still in game as the home half of the 7th started. Yes, he'd had a great start. But, things had gone south in the 6th. Alas, he gave up a 2-pitch single to the first batter. He got the next two to ground out but then gave up two more singles before being replaced by Austin Wood. Austin got the last out of the inning and struggled a bit himself in the 8th (he walked two) but managed to get out of the inning without giving up any more runs. Sadly, the offense only managed to score one run. Thus, the loss.

The offense struggled so much because they ran into a red-shirt freshman (Miles Morgan) who pitched the game of his life. Going into the game, he was second in the Big 12 in number of strikeouts (45 Ks in 36.2 innings...for an average of 1.24 per inning). He threw 15 today. That's an obnoxious "Cat Osterman like" number. Yikes. He struck out everyone in the starting lineup at least once. He got Nick Peoples and Drew Stubbs three times. He didn't walk anyone. In the 8th, though, he hit the first two (pinch hitters Hunter Harris and Clan Van Hook) before getting Nick Peoples out on a sac bunt and striking out (of course) Chance Wheeless and Drew Stubbs to end the threat. The one run for the Horns came in the 4th. Drew Stubbs doubled and then stole 3b during Carson Kainer's at-bat. Carson struck out swinging. Bradley Suttle struck out looking. Kyle Russell singled (rbi). He then stole 2b but Preston Clark grounded out to 3b to end the scoring for the Horns. By the way, Morgan threw 130 pitches by my count in his complete game win.

Here's hoping things go the Horns' way tomorrow. Hook 'em!
