Alumni news: Halsey traded
So, the news all through spring training was whether Brad Halsey or Claudio Vargas would be the 5th starter for the Diamondbacks. Come today there's news that Brad's been traded to the A's for Juan Cruz. So, now Brad's joining Huston in Oakland. Brad's being added to the A's 40-man roster. 'Sounds like Brad's sad to be leaving Phoenix. It must've been a bit of a shock. He was expecting to start for the Diamondbacks on Sunday when he got to the park. Instead, he was told to pack his bags. Wow. A few links:
- A's acquire Brad Halsey from Arizona for Juan Cruz (Oakland A's press release)
- Halsey dealt to Athletics for reliever by Nick Piecoro (The Arizona Republic)
- A's Trade Cruz for Halsey by Ken Arneson (Baseball Toaster)
UPDATE. Another article: A's send Cruz to Arizona for starter by Josh Suchon (insidebayarea.com). A couple of quotes:
From Huston Street: "He was a major part of our national championship team, he was our Friday night starter. He's a left-hander and knows how to pitch. He came up with the Yankees. If you can handle New York, you can pitch anywhere."
From Brad: "Any time you are supposed to be competition for a job and you are traded, they think somebody else can do the job better. That's their opinion. I have mine. It (spring) was just a situation where I didn't pitch well."
