Fall Exhibition: Baylor at Texas - October 14, 2007
If you were paying attention to the TexasSports.com baseball page (rather than this page), you would've seen that Texas is in the midst of fall practices. They're also playing a couple of exhibition games before they finish things off with the Fall World Series. I hope you were paying attention. Things have been rather off-kilter around here for the last couple of months and I haven't had time to update this page much. Sorry about that. I did make it out to Dell Diamond on Saturday to see the Baylor/Texas exhibition game and had a nice time. There were quite a few Texas-exes in the crowd. It was fun seeing them.
The weather was nice and the mood was laid back. Since it was an exhibition game, the letter of the law (as it were) was not followed. Texas used a line-up of 11 batters...and added two more into the middle of things near the end of the game. Baylor used 9 batters for most of the game but threw in 3 extras in the final inning. The teams played 12 full innings. It was announced that they'd be playing 12 one-inning games but the report on the TexasSports.com page lists it as a "pre-arranged 12-inning affair" and reports the score as such. Shrug. I guess it doesn't really matter one way or the other. If it was 12 one-inning games, Texas won 3, Baylor won 1, and the rest ended in ties. If it was one 12-inning game, Texas won 5-3.

- 2nd inning - Baylor
- Hornung singled on a pop-up behind 1b. The wind was blowing hard across the field (from the 1b to 2b direction) and blew a ball that seemed headed for the stands fair. Belt and Torres lost the ball in the sun and it fell safely about 10 feet in fair territory. Hornung mysteriously tried to stretch the single into a double and was thrown out easily (4-6) at 2b.

- Ware walked.
- Weemes grounded out (2-3, the ball died at the plate), moving Ware to 2b.
- Miller doubled to rf, scoring Ware.
- Hornung popped out to 2b.
- Texas sent Keith Shinaberry to the mound.
- A note about Keith: they seem to have been working quite a bit on his stance on the mound over the last couple of seasons. In his Freshman year, he'd start out bent way over with his hands nearly touching the ground. I noticed last year that he was standing a lot taller before pitching and more so now. He still bends way over and has a side-arm/submarine motion as he throws but he doesn't look so uncomfortable when he's checking the runners on base before he goes into his motion. As a Freshman, it looked like he was gonna break his neck whenever he checked out a runner at 1b. Anyway...
- Dickerson grounded out to 2b to end the inning.
- 10th inning - Texas
- Hernandez doubled to no-man's land behind 2b. Nice hustle to get to 2b.
- Shepherd grounded out to the pitcher, moving Hernandez to 3b.
- Rupp lined out to ss.
- Keyes grounded out to 3b.
- 11th inning - Baylor
- Texas sent Cole Green to the mound.
- Hensen singled to rf.
- Udell struck out.
- Miles reached on a fielder's choice to ss. Hensen took off early (hit and run) and Hernandez tried to catch him at 2b. He was too late and the relay back to 1b was too late to catch Miles. The only play was at 1b so that was a bit of a mental hiccup for the Horns.
- Booker singled to rf. Hensen tried to make it home but a fantastic throw by Lusson in rf caught Hensen at the plate. Miles moved to 2b.
- Ware flew out to cf.
- 11th inning - Texas
- Baylor sent Erik Forestiere to the mound.
- Pat McCrory (who made this one plate appearance but did not enter the game defensively) struck out looking.
- Todd Gilfillan (repeat previous comment) grounded out to ss. Weems made a very nice play to catch Gilfillan.
- Tucker struck out looking.
- 12th inning - Baylor
- Baylor sent 3 new batters to the plate at the beginning of the inning and then went to the "expected" order with the 4th batter. One of those "exhibition game" oddities that made scoring the game a bit of a challenge!
- Kel Presley flew out to cf (and then replaced Miller in rf for the bottom of the inning).
- Andrew Cooley struck out looking (and I don't think he went into the field).
- Tim Hartland reached on an error by 3b (and then replaced Udell at c for the bottom of the inning). Sorry to say, I can't remember the details of the error.
- Weems (back to the "expected" batting order) singled to rf. Hartland moved to 2b.
- Miller batted into a fielder's choice (Tucker fielded at 3b and stepped on the bag to get the lead runner).
- 12th inning - Texas
- Torres singled through the right side.
- Danks struck out.
- During Clark's at-bat, Torres stole 2b on the 1st pitch and moved to 3b on a wild pitch.
- Clark popped out to the catcher. A very nice play by the catcher. I don't know how he stayed with the ball which was whirling around madly in the wind.
- Moldenhauer flew out to ss. Yet another fantastic defensive play by Weems.
Those were two very exciting plays on which to end the game. Wow. Weems is a very good shortstop and I won't miss him next year! I'm sure he'll be drafted and outta there next June. It's fun to watch him play. But, I'd rather not see him make those plays against my team. Heh heh.
