Kansas at Texas - May 6, 2006
The pitching was great and the hitters worked together very nicely today as the Horns beat Kansas 11-4. We were worried that the rain would come but it stayed away and the weather was really pretty nice for a game. It was a bit muggy early on but the wind driving that thunderstorm toward Disch-Falk cleared things up late in the game.
The line:
R H E
Kansas 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 3 - 4 10 2
Texas 0 1 1 2 0 1 0 6 x - 11 13 0
Texas had Brett Lewis catching today and Preston Clark in the dh spot.
The game:
- 1st inning
- Kansas
- Riley Boening started for Texas.
- Simpson walked (full count) and was then picked off (136) during Price's at-bat.
- Price struck out swinging (1-2 count)...Brett dropped the ball so had to throw Price out at 1b.
- Baty struck out looking (1-2 count).
- Texas
- Nick Peoples walked on 4 pitches...bad start for the Kansas pitcher (Nick Czyz).
- Chance Wheeless hit into a double play (63). The ss fielded, stepped on the bag and threw to 1b.
- Drew Stubbs lined out to lf.
- 2nd inning
- Kansas
- Milner grounded out to ss (great stop and throw by Chais Fuller).
- Schweitzer flew out to cf.
- Allman walked (3-1 count).
- Morrison struck out swinging (1-2 count).
- Texas
- Carson Kainer walked (3-1 count).
- Preston advanced the runner on a 13 sac bunt.
- Bradley Suttle doubled to the lf/cf gap (rbi).
- Chais flew out to shallow rf.
- Kyle Russell flew out to the warning track in lf.
- 3rd inning
- Kansas
- Preston Land was hit by the first pitch. Supposedly. Clearly, he did not feel anything but the ump gave him 1b. And, it wasn't one of those pitches that grazed his jersey. Nope. Supposedly, it hit him below the knee. And, clearly, he did not feel anything. But, he played along and trotted down to 1b.
- Parzyk moved Land to 2b on a 5-3 sac bunt.
- Simpson reached on an infield single. Nice stop by Bradley behind the 2b bag. On the play, Land rounded 3b and looked back to find the ball zipping in to Nick. It was a really good thought by Bradley who realized he had no chance to get the batter and thought he might just catch Land off-guard. It almost worked but Land beat the throw.
- For reasons none of us could understand, Kansas then tried a squeeze bunt. We couldn't understand it 'cause Land is a big guy...along the lines of Jeff Ontiveros. Weird. Anyway, Price squared and bunted. The ball went right to Riley who easily threw Land out at home. Weird.
- Baty struck out looking.
- Texas
- Brett struck out looking on three pitches.
- Nick grounded out to 3b.
- Chance singled to lf.
- Drew doubled to the rf corner (rbi).
- Czyz tried to pick Drew off at 2b but made a bad throw. Drew moved to 3b on the play.
- Carson was hit by the second pitch to him.
- Preston walked (3-1 count) to load the bases.
- The Horns, sadly, don't seem to do well when the bases are loaded. It's weird but seems to be true.
- Bradley grounded out to 1b unassisted.
- 4th inning
- Kansas
- Milner singled through the right side.
- Schweitzer struck out looking.
- Allman flew out to rf (in foul territory). In the at-bat, Allman fouled off 4 pitches before he hit one to a place where a Texas defender could catch it.
- Morrison walked. During his at-bat, Milner advanced to 2b on what was ruled a passed ball. I rather think it should've been a wild pitch. But, I don't suppose it makes much difference.
- Land struck out looking.
- Texas
- Chais flew out (actually more of a pop out) to shallow cf.
- Kyle grounded out to 1b unassisted.
- Brett was hit by a pitch (3-0 count).
- Nick was hit by a pitch (2-2 count).
- Chance doubled to rf (2 rbi).
- Kansas sent Sean Land in to pitch.
- Drew struck out swinging (1-2 count). Dropped third strike so the catcher had to throw to 1b to complete the out.
- 5th inning
- Kansas
- Parzyk struck out swinging.
- Simpson singled through the right side.
- Price popped out to 1b.
- Baty popped out to 2b.
- Texas
- Land struck out the side (Carson, Preston, and Bradley). That made for a rather worried group of fans in the stands. I mean...4 batters and 4 strike outs? Yowsa. We sure were glad Land hadn't started the game. Whew.
- 6th inning
- Kansas
- Milner grounded out to 2b.
- Schweitzer flew out to lf.
- Allman walked (3-1 count).
- Morrison lined out to 3b. A fantastic diving catch by Nick.
- Texas
- Chais singled up the middle.
- Kyle moved Chais to 2b on a 13 sac bunt.
- Brett reached on an infield single. Chais moved to 3b. On the play, the pitcher made a play for the ball but only managed to help Texas by slowing the ball down enough that Brett was able to reach safely.
- Nick singled to lf (rbi). Runners at 1b and 2b.
- Chance grounded out to 2b (41, oddly enough, as the first baseman also went after the ball and the pitcher ended up covering 1b). Runners at 2b and 3b.
- Drew walked (full count) to load the bases.
- Uh-oh.
- Carson grounded out to ss.
- 7th inning
- Kansas
- Texas sent Joseph Krebs in to pitch.
- Land struck out swinging (9-pitch full count).
- Elrich pinch hit for Parzyk and grounded out to 1b unassisted on the first pitch. This seemed like another odd decision by Kansas. Usually, the offense seems to prefer the righty-lefty matchup. But, Texas sent Joseph (a lefty) in to pitch and Kansas reacted by replacing the right-handed hitter due up with a left-handed pinch hitter. Shrug.
- Simpson flew out to cf.
- Texas
- Kansas sent Alenir in at c.
- Preston flew out to lf. Allman made a great catch to rob Preston of a hit.
- Bradley walked (full count).
- Chais grounded out to 3b.
- Kyle flew out to lf.
- 8th inning
- Kansas
- Price doubled down the 3b line.
- Baty flew out to cf.
- Milner singled to lf. Runners at the corners.
- Schweitzer singled to lf (rbi).
- Texas sent Austin Wood in to pitch.
- Allman hit into a 643 double play.
- Texas
- Kansas sent Marks in to pitch.
- Brett worked the count full, fouled off an extra pitch, and then singled threw the left side.
- Nick reached on a bunt single.
- Chance advanced the runners on a beautiful 53 sac bunt.
- Kansas sent Smyth in to pitch.
- Drew singled to cf (2 rbi).
- Carson doubled to the lf corner (rbi).
- Preston grounded out to 3b. A really good play by the third baseman robbed Preston of a hit. Second at-bat in a row that Preston ended up hitting into tough luck.
- Bradley singled to cf (rbi).
- Chais singled through the left side. Runners at 1b and 2b.
- The runners advanced a base on a wild pitch.
- Kyle reached on an error by lf. Both runners scored. I thought the play should've been ruled a double. Kyle hit a line drive right at the left fielder. That kind of ball is really hard to judge and the left fielder thought it was a bit lower than it was. When he realized it was going higher than he thought, he ran back a couple of steps and reached for the ball but it glanced off his glove and rolled to the wall. Ah well.
- Brett struck out looking.
- Note how Texas did not load the bases in the 8th.
- 9th inning
- Kansas
- Morrison singled up the middle.
- Land popped out to 1b. Chance made a great over-the-shoulder catch on a ball in foul territory.
- Afenir singled to rf. Runners at 1b and 2b.
- Simpson doubled over Drew's head in cf (2 rbi).
- Texas sent Keith Shinaberry in to pitch.
- Price singled through the left side (rbi). Runners at the corners.
- Baty grounded out to 2b (rbi).
- Milner popped out to 1b. Another great over-the-shoulder catch in foul territory by Chance. It wasn't quite as impressive as the first one but still pretty.
- Texas
- Did not bat.
