UT-Pan American at Texas - Feb. 8, 2006

The bats came alive this afternoon as the Horns beat UT-Pan American 15-2. It was perfect weather for baseball: 73 deg F with no wind and a nice sunny sky.

The line:

                                             R H E
     UT-Pan American 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 - 2 7 4
     Texas 6 1 1 4 3 0 0 0 x - 15 16 0

The pitchers, for the most part, looked great. Riley Boening pitched the first two innings for Texas. He faced 7 batters, gave up one single and struck out two. Kyle Walker pitched the 3rd and 4th and struck out the first 5 batters he faced; he got the 6th to ground out to ss. Austin Wood pitched the 5th and 6th; he gave up a double in the 5th, a single in the 6th and struck out two. Juston Street came on for the 7th and gave up the first run of the game for the Horns. Here's how his inning went: walk, single, strikeout swinging, strikeout looking, single (rbi), walk, strikeout looking. Yikes! His brother Jordon came on for the 8th and went 1-2-3. Joseph Krebs came on for the 9th. He struck out the first batter he faced, hit the next guy, gave up back-to-back singles (allowing the hit batter to score), got the next guy to hit into a fielder's choice, and got the final batter of the game to ground out to ss. All in all, a very good day for the pitching staff.

On the offensive side of things, every starter except for Bradley Suttle scored at least one run. Every starter except for Drew Stubbs got at least one hit. And, every starter except for Nick Peoples batted in at least one run. Peoples walked and scored a run in the 1st and struck out looking to end the 1st, grounded out to 3b and 2b in the 4th and 5th, and singled in the 7th. Jordan Danks grounded out to 1b in the 1st, struck out swinging in the 2nd, singled and scored in the 4th, tripled and scored in the 5th, and flew out to cf in the 7th. Stubbs walked and scored in the 1st, reached on an error and scored in the 2nd, walked and scored in the 4th, and hit a sac fly to lf in the 5th. Chance Wheeless singled (2 rbi) and scored in the 1st, singled (2 rbi) in the 2nd, singled and scored in the 4th, and hit a double and scored in the 5th. Carson Kainer doubled in the 1st, ground into a double play in the 2nd, doubled and scored in the 4th, and reached on an error in the 5th. Bradley Suttle singled (rbi) in the 1st and was then caught stealing 3b, grounded out to 2b in the 3rd and 4th, flew out to rf in the 5th (on a really good play by the UT-Pan American right fielder), and grounded out to ss in the 8th. Chais Fuller singled and scored in the 1st, grounded out to ss in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, popped out to 2b in the 6th, and grounded out to 3b in the 8th. Preston Clark tripled (nice hustle) and scored in the 1st, homered in the 3rd (I thought it was gonna hit the top of the fence but it just cleared the top...right under the score board), and struck out looking in the 4th. Clay Van Hook singled (rbi) in the 1st, grounded out to 1b in the 3rd, and singled and scored in the 5th. The only substitute player to reach base was Todd Gilfillan who reached on an error in the 8th but was stranded at 3b.

Defensively, the Horns played an error-free game. Peoples started in rf and moved to 2b in the top of the 7th. Danks played lf. Stubbs started in cf and was replaced by Bryan Herrera in the top of the 7th. Wheeless started at 1b and was replaced by Kyle Russell in the top of the 7th. Kainer hit in the dh spot through the 5th; when the dh spot came up again in the 8th, Gilfillan stepped in. Suttle and Fuller played 3b and ss respectively for the duration. Clark started at c and was replaced by Brett Lewis in the bottom of the 6th. Van Hook started at 2b and was replaced in the line-up by Preston Pehrson in the bottom of the 6th (Pehrson went into rf).

This was a good win for the Horns after their sad start to the season in San Diego.
