Texas at San Diego - Feb. 3, 2006

I listened to the game on the radio. Here's basically how things went:

1st inning
Nick Peoples walked to lead things off for the Horns but he was stranded at 3rd. In the bottom (Kyle McCulloch pitching for Texas), San Diego went down in order.

2nd inning
Bradley Suttle started his collegiate career with a single. Alas, he was stranded at 1b. In the bottom, down in order again. Yeah.

3rd inning
Nick Peoples reached on a one-out single. Jordan Danks beat out a double play throw to 1b (Peoples out). Danks stole 2b with Drew Stubbs at the plate but was stranded there. In the bottom, Kyle walked the 8th batter (Singleton) he faced. Singleton stole 2b and was stranded there.

4th inning
Horns went down in order for the first time this year. In the bottom, Ruth led off with a walk and scored on a double by Snyder for the first run of the game. The next batter hit a hard liner off McCulloch's right leg (163 for the first out of the inning, baserunner to 3b). Kyle had to leave the game and was replaced by Randy Boone. Entertainingly, Randy threw to 2b before his first pitch to appeal the baserunner's advance to 3b. The runner was ruled out. Explanation? The batter was called out on the liner (out should read L16 not 163) which went off McCulloch's leg to the ss (Chais Fuller) without hitting the ground. So, the baserunner was ruled out for advancing to 3b without first tagging 2b. A very odd double play. Two singles (and an error) later, Texas got out of the inning after giving up only one run. Whew.

5th inning
Brett Lewis was hit by a pitch. Clark flew out and Fuller hit into a double play. In the bottom, the 1st batter popped out. The 2nd batter (bottom of the order, sadly) was beaned. The 3rd batter singled (runners at 1b and 2b). Boone was called for a full-count balk (runners at 2b and 3b with one out). The 4th batter hit a sac fly (rbi, two outs). Joey Parigi was sent in to pitch for Texas. Entertainingly, Keith Moreland said Joey was from Monterrey, Mexico, when he was talking about his high school career. Heh. Anyway. Joey walked the first batter he faced (runners at the corners) and then struck out the next batter to end the inning. Texas down 0-2.

6th inning
Brian Matusz in to pitch for San Diego (Josh Butler was the starter). Peoples struck out looking. Jordan Danks walked and was then thrown out on a fielder's choice (Drew Stubbs safe at 1b on the play). Wheeless popped out to end the top half of the inning. In the bottom, Romanski reached on a 1-out single (Nick Peoples made a good play on the ball to keep the runner at 1b). Brett Lewis threw the runner out on a bunt attempt for the 2nd out of the inning. The batter then grounded out to end the inning.

7th inning
The Horns went down in order again. Tsk tsk tsk. In the bottom, the 8th hitter in the lineup (Singleton) singled. He moved to 2b on a sac bunt. The next batter flew out. Juston Street was sent in to pitch for Parigi. Singleton reached on an infield single (runners at the corners). Austin Wood replaced Street on the mound. He hit the batter (bases loaded). The next batter hit a single to deep ss (2 rbi). Abruzzo finally put us out of our misery by grounding out. Texas down 0-4.

8th inning
Preston Clark struck out looking. Aside: that seems like a lot of "caught looking" strikeouts for the Horns...and, only two hits so far. And, on that note, Chais Fuller singled. Nick Peoples followed that up with another single (runners at 1b and 2b). Jordan Danks struck out swinging. Drew Stubbs doubled down the lf line to score both runners. Yes! Chance Wheeless flew out to cf to end the top half. In the bottom, Wood hit the first batter. Sigh... He then stole 2b. The batter bunted to the pitcher who got the lead runner out at 3b. Good play by Wood. Batter at 1b on the fieder's choice. The next batter flew out to rf. Hansen (9th batter in the order) got his first hit of the day...single to rf (runners at 1b and 2b). The next batter was called out on strikes. Whew. Texas down 2-4.

9th inning
Suttle flew out to lf. Kainer grounded out. Lewis popped out to end the game. Sigh...too bad.
